One of my favorite childhood games was walking through the redwood forests or oak groves first thing in the morning.   With the light streaming through the leaves and branches, the smell of damp moss and the song of the birds, was like a stepping into my own private fantasyland.   

 

Many years later I learned that this practice of walking through the forest, opening the senses had a name "Forest Bathing or as the Japanese call it Shinrin-yoku".

When my daughters where younger I would take them on walks through the forest so they could experience the beautiful outdoors. On one of our walks my oldest said “look mom this tree has a grumpy face; I’m going to call him Grumpy”.    

 

Her observation of finding a tree’s personality inspired this photographic collection.
