Water – a living substance, the most common and least understood. It defies the basic laws of physics yet holds the key to life.
Breaking it down, water makes up 71% of the Earth’s surface. 95% of all the earth water is contained by our oceans as salt water, while the remaining 3.5% is held in our freshwater lakes, frozen water locked up in glaciers and polar ice caps.
The human body is made up of 60% water, our brain and heart are composed of 73% water, lungs 83%, skin 64%, muscle and kidneys are 79% even our bones contain 31% water!
The fresh water on Earth today is all we’re ever going to receive in the years to come. So far, our planet hasn’t ever managed to create any new water, and just a tiny fraction of it has managed to escape out into space.
Did you know that our fresh water we drink and bath with is from the same water consumed by dinosaurs billions of years ago?
Rivers in the sky also known as “atmospheric rivers” contain some of the largest fresh water on Earth. They’re a completely different form of liquid - light and air born, able to transport billions of gallons of water hundreds of thousands of miles across the globe.
Water is precious, full of mystery, awe and important for sustaining all life on our planet. Please take a moment this month to find ways you can help preserve the highly precious element.
